How unwelcoming waiting areas can undermine patient trust
Trust is the foundation of a strong patient-doctor relationship. If the patient feels valued from the moment they walk into the facility, they are more likely to engage in open communications, follow medical advice and return for any follow-up appointments. If a healthcare environment invests in waiting room design, it’s not just about a ‘good-looking’ space – it’s building confidence within the patient about the healthcare system.
In October 2024, 11.1% of patients waited more than 12 hours from arrival in A&E. Now imagine you’re sat on an old, uncomfortable chair for most of that time. It’s not going to put you in the best mood.
Getting the right seating is crucial for gaining a patient’s trust. “But how?” We hear you ask. As mentioned previously, a good seat can make your stay more comfortable, but a great seat can make you feel at ease. The patient can be waiting for a length of time before they see a nurse or doctor so it’s essential that they’re comfortable whilst waiting. An outdated, uncomfortable waiting area can create anxiety and frustration — before the patient has even seen a doctor.
